We are now half-way through the winter quarter and I am sure many of you are starting to feel the pinch of pending final projects and exams coming up in a few weeks, and are slaving away on your papers, presentations, and whatever else it is you need to do for your classes.
Perhaps you are looking for a great meeting spot for your group, a place to take a break and take off the edge. Lucky for us, our campus is surrounded by so many awesome bars and restaurants, many just right across the street from our classes. The below list is in order of what is closest to campus and my favorites.
THE CHIEFTAIN, red building on 12th Avenue you can practically see it from Pigott building. It is the quintessential college bar with booths, a few large screen TVs, and Trivia Night. They have Happy Hour every single day and different types of specials. For instance, they have ALL DAY HAPPY HOUR on Mondays and TACO TUESDAYS on, you guessed it, Tuesdays.
Chieftain Irish Pub & Restaurant, 908 12th Ave Seattle, WA 98122 / (206) 324-4100 / http://chieftainirishpub.com/
Right next door is RHEIN HAUS that has an outdoor section perfect for summer days. For those who are bold and like to chill outside, they do have heat lamps to keep you warm. Now depending where you enter and sit down, if you never moved like go to the bathroom, you would not know how actually Huge this place is. Inside toward the back you will find lanes and lanes of Bocce. It’s the perfect place to meet your study group, friends, and even bring your family here. They also have Happy Hour specials.
Rhein Haus, 912 12th Ave Seattle, WA 98122 / (206) 325-5409 / http://www.rheinhausseattle.com/Rhein_Haus/HOME.html
If you are looking for a quiet spot to get away from the hustle and bustle of students typing away on keyboards at the library or anywhere else on campus, then THE OLD SAGE is the place for you. It has a speakeasy feel to it with dark wood furnishing and burgundy arm chairs. Pork Belly Blt is delicious!
The Old Sage, 1410 12th Avenue Seattle, WA 98122 / (206) 557-7430 / http://www.mccrackentough.com/theoldsage/
CAFÉ PRESSE is a laid back spot for studying and hanging out. Delicious coffee and hot chocolate and small plates that will satisfy you between study breaks.
Café Presse, 1117 12th Ave Seattle, WA 98122 / (206) 709-7674 / http://cafepresseseattle.com/home/
GSC holds their GRADS @ THE GARAGE event each quarter and it’s always a fun time. Not to mention that we offer FREE FOOD, BILLIARDS AND BOWLING. Can’t go wrong! Our next event is on Thursday, February 12th 8-11PM.
Garage, 1130 Broadway Seattle, WA 98122 / (206) 322-2296 / http://garagebilliards.com/
BARRIO and ELYSIAN BREWERY are “off the grid” so to speak, in other words they are passed Union Avenue but still on 12th Avenue and are worth the walk and checking out.
Barrio, 1420 12th Ave Seattle, WA 98122 / (206) 588-8105 / http://www.barriorestaurant.com/
Barrio has these walls filled with hundreds of candles that separate sections of the restaurant from the bar. One time, I got to see one of the employees lighting all hundreds of them. We were at the bar for a couple hours and she was still at it when we left. Fun job! Short of that piece of entertainment, the food and drinks are tasty! Salud! Last but not least, Elysian Brewery has a great selection of their own beer and a very delicious Macaroni & Cheese dish.

[I moved to Washington from California a little over a year ago and slowly but surely discovering Seattle. Through my DISCOVER SEATTLE Blog, I will be sharing my adventures of places to eat, the nightlife, and other events that I have attended or feel will be a cool event to attend to that I will share on GSC Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and World Press. I look forward to meeting you all at our GSC events. Cheers!]
